How to Decide on Exterior Paint Colors

Posted on February 20, 2019

Deciding on exterior house painting colors can be much harder than you imagine. You want it to look good, but unless you can imagine what different colors will look on your house, it’s not easy. You may look at swatches, browse the Internet looking at houses, or even paint a small part of the exterior. Unfortunately, for some people, even doing all of that doesn’t end up making the decision making process simple. There’s always that fear of, “What if the whole house doesn’t look good with that color?”.

Since we know how hard it is on our customers, we decided to write this article to help.

Tip #1: Spot Undertones

Undertones are those not-so-obvious colors that can make a difference when painting the outside of your home. Look at the roof shingles, tiles, stonework, pathways, and driveway to see what colors would go well with them. For instance, if you have a lot of warm colors such as beige, khaki, brown and rust, you probably should stick with warm colors for the outside paint. If there are a lot of cool colors, such as black, gray or blue, you should stick with cool colors for your exterior house paint.

Tip #2: Consider the Style

Modern homes look best in cool, light colors. White is the most popular color, but gray would work well too. Traditional homes look best in blue, green, or yellow.

Of course, if you’re looking to go outside of the box, you may want to go beyond the traditional colors for your style of home. For instance, you may want your modern home to be a shade of purple or red. If that speaks more to your desires, you may want to look into speaking with a color consultant who can help you narrow down the creative colors you’re imagining for your home.

Tip #3: Drive Around Your Town

Most towns have homes that are similar in style, so you can get a lot of great ideas for paint colors. Find some homes you like that look similar to yours and snap a picture. When you get home, go through the pictures to see which colors you took pictures of the most.

Tip #4: Match Decor

If you have a lot of decor outside of your home, identify the common colors and then choose an exterior paint color that matches. This way your house will match your decor and you’ll probably enjoy the overall look.
